From Mark, your concert co-host:
At last fall’s FAR-West conference, I fell in love with the Scooches. Formerly known as Banjo Nickaru and Western Scooches — a name they decided was too unwieldy — they consist of Nick Russo on guitar and banjo, Betina Hershey on guitar and vocals, and any number of collaborators who join them for various performances. Whether these versatile musicians are playing 1920s-style jazz, American roots music, country, swing, or anything in between, they are unfailingly energetic, effervescent, and fun.
Nick Russo is an in-demand jazz sideman who has worked with performers as diverse as Paul McCartney, Jon Batiste, and Antonique Smith. Betina Hershey has performed in national and international tours of Broadway shows such as West Side Story and Phantom of the Opera, and was a principal dancer in films such as Enchanted and Mona Lisa Smile. Both write original music as well as putting their own stamp on the music of others.
“Their sound is totally retro — yet completely in the here and now.”

“A heart as big as the sky…full of high energy and higher spirits.”
